How LIHEAP Works Near You
LIHEAP is a federal program but it's administered locally. Here's how to find help in your area:
Most LIHEAP applications are processed through local community action agencies. Search "community action agency near me" or call your state LIHEAP office to find the nearest location.
Dial 2-1-1 from any phone to reach your local social services helpline. They can connect you to LIHEAP and other energy assistance programs in your county.
Many states now offer online LIHEAP applications. Find your state above and look for the online application link. No need to visit an office in person.
If your utility has been shut off or you've received a shutoff notice, contact your local LIHEAP office immediately. Crisis assistance can often be processed within 24 to 48 hours.
Other Ways to Get Help Paying Energy Bills
If LIHEAP isn't available or you need additional help, these programs may also assist with utility costs:
- Utility company assistance programs: most major utilities offer payment plans, budget billing, and low-income discount rates. Call your utility directly.
- Weatherization Assistance Program (WAP): free home energy efficiency improvements for low-income households. Often co-located with LIHEAP offices.
- Local charities and churches: many offer one-time emergency utility assistance. Contact your local Salvation Army, Catholic Charities, or United Way.
- State-specific programs: some states have additional energy assistance programs beyond federal LIHEAP. Check your state page for details.
