What to Expect After You Apply
Most applications take up to 30 days. Emergency crisis applications can be processed in 24–48 hours if your utility has been shut off.
Benefits are often paid directly to your utility provider and applied as a credit to your account. You may not receive cash.
You have the right to appeal a denial. Contact your state LIHEAP office within the timeframe on your denial notice, usually 30 to 60 days.
LIHEAP does not renew automatically. You must apply each benefit year. Mark your calendar for when your state opens applications.
