How SNAP Benefits Are Calculated
SNAP benefits are based on your household's net income — not gross income. Here is how the calculation works:
| Step | Calculation |
|---|---|
| 1. Start with gross income | All household income before taxes |
| 2. Subtract earned income deduction | 20% of earned income deducted |
| 3. Subtract standard deduction | $204/mo for most households in 2026 |
| 4. Subtract dependent care costs | Actual costs if needed for work or training |
| 5. Subtract medical costs (elderly/disabled) | Medical expenses over $35/month |
| 6. Subtract excess shelter costs | Rent/mortgage + utilities above 50% of net income, up to $744/mo |
| 7. Calculate benefit | Maximum benefit minus 30% of net income = your benefit |
