How SNAP Benefits Are Calculated

SNAP benefits are based on your household's net income — not gross income. Here is how the calculation works:

StepCalculation
1. Start with gross incomeAll household income before taxes
2. Subtract earned income deduction20% of earned income deducted
3. Subtract standard deduction$204/mo for most households in 2026
4. Subtract dependent care costsActual costs if needed for work or training
5. Subtract medical costs (elderly/disabled)Medical expenses over $35/month
6. Subtract excess shelter costsRent/mortgage + utilities above 50% of net income, up to $744/mo
7. Calculate benefitMaximum benefit minus 30% of net income = your benefit
Example for a family of 4: Maximum benefit is $994. If your net income is $800/month, your benefit is $994 – (30% × $800) = $754/month.
