About this data
We monitor 2,148 Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher (HCV) programs across all 50 states nightly — tracking only HCV and combined programs, not other housing types. Our system fetches each public housing authority website, detects content changes, and uses AI to verify whether the Section 8 waitlist status has changed. We only mark a Section 8 waitlist as open when the PHA website clearly and unambiguously states the Housing Choice Voucher waitlist is currently accepting applications from the general public.
This tool is designed to help you find open Section 8 waitlists faster — but it is not a guarantee of accuracy. Section 8 waitlist status can change with little notice, and some housing authorities update their websites infrequently or use language our system may not catch. Always verify directly with your local housing authority before applying for Section 8.
My city isn't listed — does that mean there's no help available?
Not at all. A city not appearing here simply means our system hasn't detected an open Section 8 HCV waitlist there — not that housing assistance is unavailable. Even when Section 8 waiting lists are closed, many areas have other options: project-based voucher programs tied to specific properties, affordable housing developments with their own waitlists, state-funded rental assistance, and local emergency housing funds. Contact your local public housing authority directly to ask about all available programs. Visit our Section 8 near me page to find your local PHA's contact information.
If you spot an error — a waitlist marked open that is actually closed, or an open one we've missed — please let us know and we'll verify and update promptly.
