SNAP Recertification 2026 - How to Renew Your Benefits

SNAP benefits do not renew automatically — you must recertify before your certification period ends to avoid a gap in benefits. Many households recertify every 6 or 12 months, but your state may use a different certification period. Start the process at least 30 days before your deadline.

What Is SNAP Recertification?

SNAP recertification (also called renewal) is the process of verifying that you still qualify for food stamp benefits. Your state SNAP office reviews your income, household size, and expenses to determine your continued eligibility and benefit amount. Certification periods vary by state and household type — many households recertify every 6 or 12 months, but some may have longer or shorter periods.

Your benefit amount may change at recertification. If your income, household size, or expenses have changed since your last application, your monthly SNAP benefit may go up or down at recertification.

SNAP Recertification Step by Step

Step 1
Watch for your notice

Your state will send a recertification notice by mail (or email if you opted in) about 45 days before your deadline. Check your mailbox and make sure your address is current.

Step 2
Gather your documents

Proof of identity, proof of income (recent pay stubs, benefit award letters), proof of housing costs (rent receipt or mortgage statement), and utility bills if claiming a shelter deduction.

Step 3
Complete the renewal form

Complete your state's renewal form online, by phone, by mail, or in person. Many states allow online recertification through your benefits portal.

Step 4
Attend your interview (if required)

Some states require a recertification interview by phone or in person. If contacted, respond promptly — missing the interview may result in loss of benefits.

Start at least 30 days before your deadline. If you submit your recertification before the deadline and your benefits lapse because processing takes time, your state must restore benefits retroactively. Submit early to avoid any gap.

SNAP Certification Periods by Household Type

Household typeTypical certification period
Working households with changing income6 months (some states 3 months)
Households with stable income12 months
Elderly or disabled households (fixed income)Up to 24 months in some states
Simplified reporting households12 months with interim report at 6 months

Certification periods vary by state. Check your approval letter or contact your state SNAP office for your specific deadline.

What Happens If You Miss Your Recertification?

If you miss your recertification deadline your benefits will stop. You can reapply, but you may face a gap in benefits while your new application is processed. In some states, you can receive a "restoration" of benefits if you recertify within 30 days after your deadline — contact your state office immediately if you missed your deadline.

Report changes in income or household size promptly. Most states require you to report changes within 10 days. Failing to report increases in income can result in an overpayment that you must repay.
