Section 8 Application Process

1
Find your local PHA

Section 8 is administered by local Public Housing Authorities, not the federal government. Use HUD's PHA directory to find every housing authority in your area.

2
Check if the waiting list is open

Contact each PHA directly or check their website. Many lists are closed. Apply to every open PHA in your region — you can be on multiple lists at once.

3
Gather documents

Photo ID and Social Security numbers for all household members, proof of income (pay stubs, benefit letters), rental history, and current housing information.

4
Submit your application

Applications are typically submitted online, by phone, or in person. The application itself is free. Never pay anyone to help you apply for Section 8.

5
Keep contact info updated

Update your address, phone, and email with every PHA you applied to. Missing a notification typically results in removal from the waiting list.

6
Attend your briefing

When your name is called, you attend an eligibility interview and briefing session. If approved, you receive a voucher and typically have 60–120 days to find housing.

Never pay to apply for Section 8. The application is always free. If anyone asks you to pay a fee to get on a waiting list or receive a voucher faster, it is a scam.
