SNAP & WIC — Yes, You Can Get Both
SNAP and WIC are completely separate federal benefit programs with different eligibility rules, different benefits, and different application processes. Receiving one does not affect the other. You can — and should — apply for both if you qualify.
Having SNAP does not disqualify you from WIC, and having WIC does not reduce your SNAP benefits.
How SNAP and WIC Work Together
SNAP
- Any low-income household
- 130–200% FPL income limit
- Works at most grocery stores
- Buy almost any food
- Monthly benefit on EBT card
WIC
- Pregnant, postpartum, infants, children under 5
- 185% FPL income limit
- WIC-authorized stores only
- Specific approved foods only
- Monthly package + CVB
Because WIC covers specific nutritional foods for a targeted population, and SNAP covers general food purchases for all low-income households, the two programs complement each other perfectly. WIC fills nutritional gaps for mothers and young children while SNAP covers the household's broader food needs.
Income Limits: Can You Qualify for Both?
Both programs use the federal poverty level but have different cutoffs:
| Program | Income Limit (family of 4) | % FPL |
|---|---|---|
| SNAP (gross) | $3,575/month | 130% |
| WIC | $5,088/month | 185% |
Since WIC has a higher income limit than SNAP, anyone who qualifies for SNAP automatically meets WIC's income requirement. However, WIC also requires you to be pregnant, postpartum, an infant, or a child under 5.
How to Apply for Both Programs
Apply for each program separately — they have different offices and applications:
- SNAP — Apply through your state's SNAP office or benefits portal. Many states allow online applications. Find your state's SNAP program →
- WIC — Apply at your local WIC clinic. You'll need to bring proof of income, ID, and proof of pregnancy or child's age. Find WIC near me →
You can apply for both at the same time. If you're already on SNAP, bring your SNAP approval letter to your WIC appointment — it can speed up income verification.

SNAP and WIC can also be combined with:
- Medicaid — health coverage for low-income individuals and families
- CHIP — health coverage for children
- LIHEAP — help with energy bills
- Section 8 — rental assistance
If you qualify for SNAP, you likely qualify for several of these programs as well. Use our assistance programs guide to find everything you're eligible for.
